Product Portfolio — Stancor Bright Bars

Supplier of bright steel bars — cold drawn, smooth turned, peeled and centreless ground in round, square, hexagon and flat sections, 4 mm to 160 mm, held to ISO h8, h9, h10 and h11 tolerance and certified to EN 10204 3.1.

Free Cutting Bright Bars

The fastest bar on an automatic lathe — EN1A, EN1A Pb, 11SMn30, 11SMnPb30, 12L14 and 1215.

Free cutting steel is resulphurised on purpose. The manganese sulphide inclusions break the chip at the tool tip instead of letting it curl into a bird's nest, which is what lets a bar-fed lathe run unattended through a night shift. Leaded versions add roughly 25% to cutting speed again. The trade is that these grades are not weldable and will not harden, so they belong in machined parts rather than stressed ones. Stocked 4 mm to 80 mm in cold drawn, turned and ground condition.

Carbon Steel Bright Bars

Strength straight from stock — EN3B, EN8, EN8D, EN9, 1018, 1045 and CK45.

Carbon bright bar is bought where the part carries load as well as being machined. EN3B and 1018 stay weldable and formable for fabricated work and carburised pins. EN8, 1045 and CK45 sit in the middle, strong enough for shafts and keys as supplied and able to be induction hardened where a wear face is needed. EN9 goes further again for guides and tools that must hold a hard surface. All six are stocked cold drawn, with turned and ground options above 20 mm.

Alloy Steel Bright Bars

When the section is too thick to harden through — EN19, EN24, EN18, EN47.

Carbon steel only hardens to a limited depth. Past roughly 40 mm the centre of an EN8 shaft never reaches martensite, and the strength you designed for is not there. Chromium and molybdenum fix that: EN19 hardens through heavier sections, and EN24 with its nickel addition still hardens to centre at 150 mm while keeping impact toughness. EN47 is the chromium-vanadium spring grade. Supplied annealed for machining or quenched and tempered to a hardness band, peeled and reeled or ground.

Case Hardening & Bearing Steel Bars

Hard case over a tough core — 20MnCr5, 16MnCr5, 8620, EN353, EN36 and EN31.

A gear tooth has two contradictory requirements: a surface hard enough to resist contact fatigue, and a core tough enough not to snap. Case hardening grades answer it by carburising a 0.6-1.2 mm skin to 58-62 HRC over a core that stays at 150-200 HB. 16MnCr5 distorts least in thin sections, 20MnCr5 is the volume standard, and 8620 and EN353 carry nickel for heavier parts. EN31 is the separate case — a through-hardening bearing steel that reaches 62-64 HRC with the fine carbide structure a rollin

Stainless Bright Bars

Corrosion resistance in a machined part — 303, 304/304L, 316/316L, 410, 416, 431 and 17-4 PH.

Stainless bright bar splits two ways. If the part is only machined, 303 and 416 are sulphurised for speed and will turn at close to free-cutting rates. If it has to be welded, 304L and 316L are the grades — the sulphur that helps machining is exactly what cracks a weld. 410 and 431 harden by quenching for stainless parts that also wear, and 17-4 PH ages after machining to past 1300 MPa with almost no distortion. Supplied centreless ground to h8 where the fit is critical.
