Peeling & Reeling

Rotary machining that removes the outer skin of a hot rolled bar in one continuous cut, followed by reeling to straighten and burnish it — the standard route for heavy alloy bar.

Why heavy bar is peeled, not drawn

Above about 80 mm, drawing forces become impractical and the draw benches cannot hold tolerance. Peeling cuts the surface off instead, which has a second advantage: it removes the decarburised layer and any rolling defects completely, rather than simply compressing them.

The reeling step

Reeling passes the bar between crossed rolls to straighten it and burnish the surface, improving both straightness and roundness before any grinding operation.
